Summer Schools
The Centre held three Summer Schools, at Palace Hotel, Buxton, Selwyn College, Cambridge and
Losehill House Hotel, Derbyshire. Students from within the Centre and externally benefitted from a range of talks and activities, such as hiking, punting and visits to local attractions.
Molecular-Scale Engineering Student Conferences
Students presented posters and oral presentations to members of the Industrial and Scientific Advisory Board, representatives from EPSRC and the external examiner at the CDT Molecular-Scale Engineering Student Conference, which was normally held annually, in June, at Weetwood Hall Conference Centre.

Public engagement by some CDT students
Leeds Festival of Science - CDT students regularly exhibit work undertaken at this annual event and focus on making science palatable for the public. Exhibits normally include interactive models which are supported by coherent displays of posters; over 500 people visit the stands throughout the event. CDT Student Andy Lee said "Our aim is that people come away with a better understanding of what nanotechnology is and the great strides being made in the field. Visitors to the stands also have the chance to take home leaflets about the work we are doing, which we hope will help them understand further."
Schools visits and talks - current students regularly visit their old schools to talk to children about their experiences at University, to explain their research and engage children in science

2014
Chris Taylor won an RSC poster prize at the RSC Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry Meeting, Norwich (December)
Prizes were awarded for the three best posters at the CDT Molecular-Scale Engineering Student Conference, held at Weetwood Hall, Leeds, on 12-13 June 2014:
- Scott Bird - poster title 'A Bioinspired Approach to Data Storage' (£40 Blackwell's voucher)
- Niamh Ryall - poster title 'AFM for Imaging Breast Cancer Cells (£30 Blackwell's voucher)
- Brice Darroch - poster title 'Control of Plasmon Resonances for Nanoparticle Arrays of Differing Dimensions and Change upon Biochemical Monolayer Formation' (£20 Blackwell's voucher)
Dan Jenkinson won second prize in the poster competition at the Inter-Disciplinary Inter-DTC ([ID]2), University of Oxford, in June. Dan commented “It was a definite surprise, especially as the quality of some of the other posters was so high! The poster seemed to attract a lot of attention - it was great that people seemed to be so interested in my work and I hope to come back next year with more results”. Read more....

Andy Lee presented a poster entitled 'A Single Molecule Interrogation Approach to the RecA Mediated Patterning of DNA Nanoarchitectures', taking 2nd prize in the poster competition for his work at the UK Surface Probe Microscopy 2013, organised by the Royal Microscopical Society. Commenting on his prize, Andy commented “It was completely unexpected, there was some fantastic work being presented. But certainly a welcome surprise.” Read more....

Oliver Chammas won a prize for his poster at the Aalborg University Nanotechnology Summer School in Denmark
Extra-curricular activities of the CDT students
2014
Molecular-Scale Engineering students Will Morton, Andy Lee and several others walked 100km at the end of May to raise money for the charity Oxfam. Read more....
